Pepsi Pulled Pork and a Rebel Yell for Slow Cooker Saturdays

Hi folks. I know, I know, a day late and a dollar short right. Seriously they need to amend that to be in line with inflation. Should be a day late and a thousand dollars short if you ask me.

So here I am a day late with my “SLOW COOKER SUNDAYS” kickoff. I seriously need to pre-make my meals instead of making them on the theme day. Always puts me behind. I’m here now and ready to rock. You bring the rolls.

This recipe was a first for me. I’ve never done pulled pork before. I searched around and found some recipes but nothing spoke to me. I went to the butcher to buy my roast and the lovely lady that helped me was telling me how she makes hers. Needless to say we ended up gabbing about various ways people make it. What works and what doesn’t. How to cut the zing or do you want it zingalicious. Smokalicious or smoke free. The possibilities are endless. But one thing was clear to me. This is one of the easiest things in the world to make. I mean it is just so simple. So when something is simple you just don’t mess with it. It’s good to leave well enough alone. There are too many complicated recipes out there. This is not one of them. I was shocked how easy peasy, bbq squeezy it really is. Yah for simplicity.

Well now hold the phone people. You didn’t think I was just gonna make it without a twist did you? I kept it simple. I kept it easy. I kept it BBQ squeezy. But I’ll be darned if I’m gonna pour a Coke over a perfectly good roast. Blasphemy! I hate Coke personally. Nothing against those who like it. Nothing against the makers of Coke. But let’s just call a spade a spade here folks. Pepsi is far better. So you know what the Lunatic did right? You have guessed right? *or just read the blog post title right* Yup, I said to H- E- double hockey sticks with the Coke and poured a bottle of Pepsi instead. Yeah me! A genius! Truly, seriously, remarkably brilliant. I mean just send the Pulitzer now. Call Mensa immediately. I just made history folks. Well, actually I made Pepsi Pulled Pork but you know, potato, potat”o”.

So here it is my lovelies. The history making, Lunatic fame launching, ready for the food network now, brilliant, Mensa deserving, Pulitzer prize winning “Pepsi Pulled Pork”.

Waits for the applause….

Waits for the million dollar cheque….

Hears crickets….

Pepsi Pulled Pork:

Pork Roast (mine was a 3 pound Boneless Pork Blade Roast)
3 cups Pepsi
Onion Salt to taste (I used about 1 tablespoon)
Onion Flakes to taste (I used about 1 tablespoon)
Garlic Powder to taste (I used about 1 tablespoon)
Chili Powder to taste ( I used about 1/2 tablespoon)
Salt to taste ( I used about 1/2 teaspoon, betcha thought I was gonna say tablespoon didn’t ya)
1 jar of Barbecue Sauce ( I used Bulls eye Guinness)

Also needed:
Burger buns

Set you roast inside your slow cooker.

Add your spices.

Add your pepsi.

Cover and turn on the low setting. Will take 8 to 10 hours depending on size of your roast. (mine was small so about 8 hours)

When it looks done you want to pull it apart. I did it right in the slow cooker. You’re not cutting so it’s fine to do this way and less cleanup later which is nice. So take a two forks and start pulling the meat apart. Really easy to do, do not be intimidated by this step. It pretty much just falls apart anyway.

Now add your barbecue sauce. I covered it back up and cooked it for another 20 or so minutes to let the taste of the sauce soak into the meat.

Now you can start piling the meat on burger buns.

Serve with a smile and about a thousand napkins. So good but SO messy.

disclaimer- bun sold separately!

See, sometimes a little rebellion is a good thing. I have issues people, whatdaya want from me!!!

The only thing I would change in this is finding a way to make it less liquidy. Either use less pepsi, or maybe add a thickener to it about 30 minutes before it is done. Although I found good use for the liquid. I poured it like gravy on the mashed potatoes. Genius strikes again. I cannot be stopped people. They just keep coming to me. Next it’ll be, it’ll be….men in white coats I’m sure.

So I hope you enjoyed this first installment of “SLOW COOKER SATURDAYS”. They are now a regular feature here at the Lunatic’s. I may toss in some extra slow cooker recipes as well. I use mine tons so it frees up time for the barn, and a life not chained to the stove.

See you all soon folks. I shall return with an ice cream post that will rock your world. Okay so maybe that’s stretching it a bit. It’ll rock your socks off.

Toodles and smoochies. xx

ps. I don’t understand why my spellcheck flags so many words. It’s not like I’m just making words up or anything. Seriously spellcheck, take a pill. Pfft!

How did the sauce work for the potatoes? Was it sweet from the pepsi?

To be honest I would probably use coke on the roast and drink the pepsi 😉

  2. ping says

Another hilarious post! I really love my slow cooker, can't imagine how my life would be without it. AND, I'm a coke fan! But then I can understand why you prefer Pepsi, it's sweeter! I've never tried pulled pork either. This sounds super simple. Think I'll give it a go. Thanks!

  3. Ann says

I'm a die-hard Coke person (Diet Coke). When I make my pulled pork, it's with Coke. ….either way – it's amazing! Nicely done!

  4. Anne@frommysweetheart says

I wish I could give you a million dollar check but I can only give you a round of applause (it would have been a standing O….but I'm a Coke-Zero girl!) Coke, pepsi, generic cola….doesn't matter cuz this looks fabulous!

  5. Dee at Deelicious Sweets says

Man this would be good for Halloween! I've been instructed to make chili but this will be making an appearance this week! I'll have to use a Coke though (gasp)!

  6. The Self-Taught Cook says

As a slowcooker fanatic, this sounds great! I will definitely be trying it. And, even though I normally cook with Co-Cola (that's the way we said it in Kentucky), and drink Pepsi (or Dr Pepper, whichever is on sale), I am going to try it your way. Never let it be said I wasn't open minded. LOL

  7. Kim Bee says

@anon- It is a touch sweet but the pepsi cuts with the roast juices so it's not overly sweet. I like sweet though. I add sugar to sauces and pizzas. So I'm not the best judge. Lol. It is good over the potatoes though. It's the same idea as a sweet potato or yams with sugar. It mixes nicely. I am with you on drinking the pepsi. I drink too much. But coke is a no go here. Unless my sis in law visits, then the ban is lifted. Lol!

@Ping- I like that sugary kick. Keeps me energizer bunny hyper. The pulled pork is amazing. I was really impressed with the taste.

@Ann- Lol, okay when you visit I'll stock some Diet Coke as long as you stock some Pepsi when I visit you. Lol! Thanks my dear!

@Anne- I shall take that applause. Even better than money. I've never done the zero. Sure would help with losing some calories. I drink my pepsi straight up. It cannot help with the weight at all. And thank you so much.

@Dee- Oh man, that is so uncool chickie. Lol! It's all good, I shall love all you coke fans while drinking my better tasting pepsi. *giggles*

@Dzoli- Aren't they awesome. I could not live without mine. And thank you.

@The Self Taught Cook- I love the Kentucky way of saying it. Pepsi rules. I drink it way too much. Hence the hyperness. I love open minded people.

  8. Quay Po Cooks says

Haha, you live up to your name. BRILLIANT! I got to know about pulled pork burger during my last trip back to Quay Lo's hometown in Tulsa, Oklohoma. When I saw the name in the Menu, I thought, they pull the pork just like our "teh tarik" (pulled tea) after they cooked them. I was wondering how they going to do that. Silly me! LOL! Then, when the pulled pork burger came, it was just some shredded pork with gravy. It as very delicious and I enjoyed it. I have made pulled beef last week and equally delicuous. Pulled pork is on my to do list. This recipe sounds so easy and it is worth trying but I will use Coke not Pepsi.

  9. Tracy says

We drain the liquid before adding the BBQ sauce when we make ours. But then we don't even use any liquid to start with so there probably isn't as much as your since you had 3 cups of Pepsi.

  10. kristy says

I'm putting this on my list of things to make. I've never done pepsi pork – or coke pork – or any kind of soda pork and I'm not sure why. This looks amazing!!! And I'm all for the slow cooker – especially on crazy school days!

  11. healthyfoodietravels says

mm, I really need to invest in a slow cooker! Now if I only could fine one small enough for just two people and also find appropriately sized recipes… I hate having a tiny apartment kitchen!

  12. Lizzy says

Pepsi it is then!!! I always love the lunatic twists…and this sounds marvelous. Simple, yet yummy! And you gave me a huge giggle, too…double points for you, Kim B! xo

  13. janet@cupcakestocaviar says

Ooooo, another way to get my Coke fix. Kim, will you marry me? I know we're both straight and both happily married but just think of the things we could cook together!! Not to mention the rampant insanity mannnnn!

  14. Carolyn says

I was never much of a pop drinker anyway, and now I barely touch it because of diabetes, but my dear, you are wrong, wrong, wrong. Coke is way better than pepsi! 😉 Still, in a yummy pulled pork recipe, I think it hardly matters.

  15. Kim Bee says

@angsarap- Interesting with the root beer. I may have to try that.

@Quay Po Cooks- I bet having pulled pork in Tulsa was amazing. Best place to eat stuff like that. It is so easy. I had no idea. Ick, Coke makes me squirm. Lol!

@Tracy- Lol, I shall do that next time. I was being a slacker and trying to save on cleanup.

@kristy- I know right. Slow cookers rock for busy moms. I love mine.

@healthyfoodietravels- I shall send you a link for a smaller one. I have a small one I use when I do chili. The guys like theirs different than I do so I do a big batch for them and a wee little one for me. Remind me if I forget, it's been one of those days. But I like my little one. Just need to look up the model #.

@Lizzy- I am to please. Although I am stunned how many Coke fans there are. Maybe it's a conspiracy. A government plan to rule the world or something. I mean why else would anyone drink it. *evil laugh*

@Janet- I shall totally marry you…but you have to convert to pepsism. O'tay?!

@Carolyn- You must have had to stop eating and drinking a ton of stuff. My bff has it and it's so hard. Although I must say I think that way of eating is way healthier. We really all should follow that diet. But oh my dear, Coke…really? Ah, my illusions are shattered. I pictured you as a pepsi fan. *giggles*

Okay you Coke fanatics I invite you all to fly down here and we'll do a blind taste test next weekend. It's the only fair way to settle this. Book those tickets now folks. I'll wait for rsvps.

  16. janet@cupcakestocaviar says

Sorry Kim, I'm gonna have to rethink this marriage thing. Pepsi drinking may be a deal breaker. As for the taste test, did that years ago.. Coke won so neener neener neener!!

  17. Kim Bee says

@Janet- Roflmao, where's the love. Am I not worth the sacrifice? I call foul, we need a taste test with video for proof. I say we both meet up at Blogher or Foodbuzz next year and throw down on this pepsi vs coke thing. Have a public cookoff and taste off. Whatcha think twin?
You are going to snag a coke contract and me a pepsi one outta this me thinks. *giggles uncontrollably*

  18. Stephanie says

I've heard excellent things about using Pepsi and also root beer for pulled pork. I'm gonna give the soda a try next time I make it!!

  19. Lindsey@Lindselicious says

OMG I used to love Billy Idol!!! I need to give the soda + pork thing in my slow cooker. I just came back from North Carolina and am going through pulled pork withdrawals!

  20. momdecuisine says

That looks like a great sandwich! I'm all for anything in the slow cooker so I can't wait to see what else you make. I'm finding myself in the same situation in that I must make dishes a day ahead of when I plan to post, orelse there just isn't enough time in the day!

  21. janet@cupcakestocaviar says

Works for me, my blogging twin. But I still say it's a wasted effort. Coke will win 😛

And I'll take that contract hehe
