Cautionary Tale Regarding Google Plus, and Lunatic Loves These Links

Hi folks.

I’d like to start today with a cautionary tale about Google Plus. Last weekend I was doing some tweaking of albums on social media sites. We all do that. Clean up the albums, reorganize and make sure things are where they should be. I worked on Facebook for a bit. Then moved on to Google Plus.
I added some pics, sorted some albums and then came across one that had some family pictures in it. I could not recall putting them on Google Plus and I tend to be a bit private with family photos. The rule here at the Bee household is the kids have full photo approval of any of them posted on the blog. As do the extended family and friends. When I saw some photos I was unsure about I deleted the album. Big mistake. Huge! Never delete albums on Google Plus. They are linked to your Blogger and it will remove your photos from your blog. There had been food photos in the album as well. When I realized what I had done later that night I contacted Blue Host which is my hosting service. Since I am on WordPress now the tech thought it would be easily fixed. It was not. I had switched from Blogger to WordPress back in March so any photos I had posted while using my could not be restored. Which was about a year’s worth of photos. I was a bit perplexed by this, thinking since I was with WordPress that all my files were now saved through them. Not the case at all. Quite shocking really. The photo url’s are still under when you hover over the black empty boxes. I contacted my designer who did the move for me, Kita from Pass the Sushi/Silhouette Graphics. She started digging to find out what we could do to restore them. In the meantime she sent me some links, which I will share with you later in the post. If you don’t know Kita you should get to know her, she is an amazing friend to have in your corner! After reading one of the articles she sent me I went back to my Google Plus account and started to look through trying to find any albums that were still there but set to private. I found one so I immediately changed the setting on it. Some of my photos reappeared, not all but about half. I searched for more but there was only one album set to private. I had deleted the other large album. Once deleted there is no way to restore them. You have to go back through your posts and put them all back in manually. Which is what I will be doing over the next couple of months. It’s a monumental task. A year’s worth of photos vanished into thin air. Luckily I have them all saved on my computers, including the really old ones. Might have been a blessing if they had disappeared. So for those of you using Google Plus please heed this warning, do not delete albums from it. Once you do it they are gone forever from your blog. I really do not understand why they are linked and quite honestly think it’s a huge flaw in the system. One should have nothing to do with the other. There is absolutely no way deleting an album on Google Plus should result in losing photos from your blog. So when you see the warning pop up about deleting the album, listen to the warning and leave the album alone. Trust me, the amount of damage that can be done with one click is astonishing.

So for the next few months I’ll be going back through the blog placing the photos back where they belong. After moving from Blogger to WordPress I decided to add a print recipe button on the site. So I need to go back and finish doing all those anyway. So maybe it’s a blessing in disguise. I’m also working on SEO and fixing some of the formatting issues that arise when you switch from one to the other. It tends to mess with fonts and spacing on posts. So I’ll be buried under a mountain of work for the next while. Don’t fret, I’ll still keep posting new stuff. But if you’re a fellow blogger you may not see me visiting as much until I am done. I just need to power through and try to finish this as fast as possible. Honestly it keeps me up at night thinking about people visiting the blog with no photos of the food. I envision people leaving, dropping off my subscriber lists, never returning. Let’s just say I’m a bit stressed about the whole situation. So I aim to work my fingers to the bone to get it finished and get the past posts up to speed so I can just move forward with all my future plans for the blog.  So please be patient and I will try to get through it as quickly as possible. I am determined to turn a negative into a positive.

For those wanting more information on the subject of Google Plus please take a look at the following links. I hope that I’ve reached some people who did not know about this. I wish I had known.

BloggerSentral has an article called Google Plus, Picasa and Blogger Missing Photos.

The Flirty Blog has an article called More on Missing Blogger Photos and Google+.

Google also has a forum with lots of discussion about it you can view.

Please read, tell your friends. Make sure people on WordPress that switched from Blogger know. They may think they are safe when they are not. I only lost 1 years worth of photos, can you even the devastation of losing 3 or 5 years of work? Spread the word. I am totally willing to risk humiliation in order to warn others.  I am your cautionary tale. Don’t be like me. Protect your work!

Now on to some food to cheer everyone up! Welcome to Lunatic Loves These Links. For those who are new this is a series where I recap what I’ve been up to, then share some links to some food I love on the web. For those loyal fans this series is returning as a weekly feature. I like having one day to recap and have missed doing this every week. I shied away from it as it’s so much work to put together but quite honestly I love doing it and missed it too much. So it’s back baby! This means weekly guest posts are gone as I was doing those on Thursdays. I am going to start saving guest posts for when I am away. Some of you may hear from me regarding a 10 day trip I have planned for August. Driving my son out to Calgary to get him set up to his PHD out there. I am going to miss B-Dude, but look forward to cutting my grocery bill in half. Oh who I am kidding, I’ll probably spend more sending him care packages any way. I already started one. Yes, I am THAT mom. Now on to the food.

I found two of the baby ducks had been killed by something in the night. I was reduced to tears. I loved our new drifter pets and was so fond of going out to visit them in the yard. They played in the tubs of water and ran around the yard like little unruly hooligans. We’re not sure what got them. But the day I found them Mama Duck got really upset when a mama robin showed up. The robin nests here yearly and her babies had just left. I can’t imagine it was her but who knows. Mama Duck has since moved the babies on, so something had obviously been stalking them in the yard. I have no idea where they got off to now but I hope she’s keeping them safe and the remaining 9 babies are okay. I’ll miss my ducks. Bye bye duckies! On the upside we can finally mow our lawn. It’s being mowed as I type. Oh come on now, you seriously didn’t think “I” cut the grass did you? I’m too busy in the kitchen and doing REALLY important stuff, like watching Bethenny Ever After and The Real Housewives of everywhere USA! Busy gal, your Lunatic!

We are left with a bunch of these little hooligans below. I swear they are brazen. Practically knocking on mini-me’s patio door to remind her to throw food on the deck. There is quite a few that hang out at Casa Bee and are hilarious to watch get into tiffs. They chase each other all over yard and up and down trees. Wild bunch these guys. This little fellow likes to sit atop the fence post so he can watch me at the kitchen window. I picture him laughing and saying “hey lady, remember those tulip bulbs you planted last year, thanks, they made a great midnight snack!”

Toodles and smoochies! xx

It’s a tad overwhelming but I’m sure it’s a surmountable obstacle. Glad to spread the word.

Hey, that is a lot of work you have ahead of you. Eat cake and then of course some heavenly hash ice cream in between or fresh fruit in a banana cake wrapper. Thanks that was so sweet of you, but then again your are quite sweet with a little bit of nuts on top please, LOL.

    • Kim Bee says

Yup, I am going to be one busy little Bee for some time. Oh well, it’ll motivate me to get cracking on the print recipe in old posts. You are most welcome. Loved those wrappers, such a cool idea. I am a bit nuts eh. Like a sundae topped with nuts. It’s all good.

Aye carumba… what a pain in the arse!! I wish that I could hop onto the nearest unicorn for a rainbow ride up to Canada to help you restore those photos…. and eat any leftover Cocoa Pebbles cheesecake that you might have hovering around your fridge… :)

    • Kim Bee says

Omg Becca, I am dying laughing. If there was some left I’d gladly give it to in exchange for a unicorn miracle. Heck I’d bake you a fresh batch even.

  3. says

aw those poor ducks!! Thats awful :(

And sorry to hear about your photos! That sounds like such a horrible pain, thanks for the heads up! And your week in pics look de-licious. That cocoa pebble cheesecake is genius.

  4. says

Hahaha, the food really did cheer me up! And I can so feel the frustration in that situation. One time, I deleted a bunch of photos from wordpress not realizing that they would leave my blog but because I was always self hosted bluehost tidies up that little error in no time. Just one more reason why self-hosted blogs rock and good to know that you won;t have that problem again!

  5. says

I totally felt your pain when you posted about this on FB Kim! I went to Google+ just out of curiosity to see what photos I have on there. There are just a few that I loaded before I started my blog when I was playing around in Blogger. I ended up going with WordPress but still worry about the possibility of losing content. My blog helper, Jennette from Make My Blog Pretty, added a plug-in called WordPress Database Backup that automatically sends a backup of my blog data (text only) daily to an email address set up for this purpose. In a way I believe it’s worse to lose data than pictures because the pictures can always be restored but losing the text of your posts would be disastrous! I also recently signed up for Just Cloud which backs up my entire computer on a constant basis. All of this and I still worry! Good luck in the work ahead!

What a complete and total nightmare Kim! I’m so sorry this happened to you and I’ve never heard of such a thing. I love Kita and am sure she’ll go out of her way to help but still! Having said that I would not worry too much about it. Especially since they are past posts; you can fill them in as you post new material and no one will ‘leave you’ due to this! I’m not trying to minimize your feelings, I’m sure I’d be beside myself too but you don’t need anymore stress. Your following is secure and will hang with you I’m sure.

  7. says

There’s always something right? Ugh. But at least its keeping us on own toes! (you know, because we needed an extra helping of everything) 😉

I love the little picture of the duckies. How ridiculously cute is that!

  8. says

Oooh no. That’s terrible! I was shocked the first time I discovered that Google+ was pulling any photos I posted online, and putting them in albums for my Google+ friends to see. There is a setting in Google+ to turn off this feature which I utilized immediately. Like Kita I’m in the business of web sites and I post a lot of photos for myself and others. I wonder if this will affect the recipes we’ve pinned on Pinterest. Good luck :(
