This Onion Ring Cheeseburger is cooked on a plank, then topped with mozzarella cheese, provolone cheese, onion rings and bacon. My hubby has dubbed it The Ringer. I was too busy shoving this burger in my face to argue.
This Onion Ring Cheeseburger is one of my favourite burger recipes of all time. It is simple to make yet packed with flavour.
Honestly, I'm one of those burger obsessed people. I don't make them too often but when I'm out at a restaurant it's one of my favourite things to order. I can never get enough burgers, whether it's going out or ordering in.
Not even kidding! My love of burgers is legendary in my family. I could honestly eat them every single day.
What I love about burgers is the options for toppings are freaking endless. You can go simple, or go all out.
When I take the extra time to whoop it up with toppings I tend to go ALL out. Like this burger for instance. I got really carried away with this burger and it was SO worth it!
I cannot recommend this burger enough. It's clearly an classic example of my inner 8 year old who loves to dream up tasty burger creations. Give it a try today.
Ingredients
For the Burger:
- Ground Beef: You can use regular or lean ground beef. Or you can make your own mixture to get the right fat content for your own personal taste.
- Spices: I kept things simple and only used salt, ground black pepper, and dried parsley. Add more spice if you like but I wanted the onion rings, cheeses and bacon to stand out.
For the Toppings:
- Lettuce: I used iceberg lettuce because I love it. Any kind of lettuce can be substituted in this recipe.
- Cheese: For this particular recipe, I used mozzarella and provolone. They are two of my favourites for cheeseburgers. Any other good melting cheese would work on this cheeseburger.
- Onion Rings: Honestly, I'm a sucker for homemade onion rings but use store bought if that's what you prefer.
- Bacon: This can be skipped but you why on earth would you ever skip bacon. My personal mantra when it comes to bacon is "more is better"!
- Buns: You can make your own or use store bought buns. Honestly, they're really good with Brioche burger buns if you can find them.
Directions:
- First, start by soaking two wooden planks for about an hour.
- Once those are soaked, preheat the grill to medium heat.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and spices. DO NOT OVER MIX. If you overwork the beef it won't result in tender juicy burgers.
- Then, form burgers in preferred size.
- Next, press a small dimple with your thumb in the middle of each burger patty.
- Place the burger patties on the planks, leaving a bit of space between each patty.
- Then, place the planks on the preheated grill.
- Put the lid down and cook for about 6 to 8 minutes on each side, more or less depending on how you like your meat cooked.
- Next, you can optionally place each burger directly on the grill for a minute to get some char. Personally, I love doing this.
- Place the patties back on the planks and slide cheese on top of each burger. Put the lid back down and cook just until cheese melts. This should not take long.
- Then, remove the burgers carefully.
- Next, assemble your cheeseburgers.
- Serve.
Other Topping Options:
- Onion Strings - These are SO good on burgers and sandwiches!
- Double Smoked Cheddar Cheese - This is one on my personal favourite cheese options for burgers these days.
- Tomatoes - Honestly, I hate tomatoes so you will rarely see them on burgers I make. If you do see a tomato on a burger I make, just know I took it off before eating it. Honesty, it's my thing!
- Bourbon Bacon Jam - I freaking love bacon jam! On everything. Seriously, the stuff is heavenly.
- Garlic Aioli - Just to clarify, I love aioli but I have to swap yogurt for the mayo. It's really good on burgers and sandwiches.
- Balsamic Onions - There is a burger joint in Kingston, Ontario that makes balsamic candied onions and they are to die for! The restaurant is called Harper's Burger Bar. They make the best burgers in the world!
Storing Leftover Burgers:
- First of all, some serious information here. If you are storing cooked burgers or cheeseburgers, I highly recommend you store the burger separately from the toppings and buns. If you already assembled them I would take the time to take them apart and store everything separately. It makes a world of difference.
- Burgers and cheeseburgers can be stored for about 3 days in the fridge in a well sealed container.
- Personally, I'm not a fan of freezing cooked burgers. So, I honestly would not recommend doing that.
- That said, I will make the patties and freeze the raw burgers. It's a great way to have homemade patties on hand at all times. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. Wrap and seal them really well.
Reheating Burgers:
- Honestly, reheated burgers never taste the same to me.
- That said, if you really want to reheat leftover cooked burgers I recommend doing so in the oven. Preheat it to 350- 400 degrees F, then place the burgers on a rimmed baking sheet. Personally, I add just a touch of water or broth to pan by each burger when I reheat them. It takes about 3 to 5 minutes to reheat, depending on the temperature you set your oven to.
- You can also reheat them in frying pan. Same method, let the pan warm up, add your burgers and reheat for a few minutes. Adding a little water or broth and covering the pan can help.
- Grilling them again is also an option. Place them right on the grill, or put them in a pan and add a little broth while you heat them up.
- To be honest, my husband reheats his burgers in the microwave. I'm not a fan of this method but if you dig your microwave it only takes about a minute or two to reheat them. Use a little water so they don't dry out.

Onion Ring Cheeseburger
Ingredients
For the burger:
- 2 pounds ground beef
- 1 pinch salt or to taste
- 1 pinch pepper or to taste
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley
For the toppings:
- 1 head lettuce
- ¼ pound mozzarella cheese more if desired
- ¼ pound provolone cheese more if desired
- 1 batch onion rings cooked
- ½ pound bacon cooked
- 1 package hamburger buns
Instructions
- Soak 2 wooden planks for at least an hour.
- Preheat grill before using. Bring it to a medium heat.
- Mix spices with ground beef. do not overmix, it makes the meat tough.
- Form your burgers to your preferred size. Make sure you dimple each burger, you just lightly press your thumb down in the middle of each burger so a small imprint appears.
- Place the patties on the planks, leaving a bit of space between each burger patty.
- Place planks on the preheated grill. Put lid down and cook for about 6 to 8 minutes on each side.
- I like mine to hit the grill for a bit more char and colour so once they are at about a medium rare I place each one on the grill grates and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes on each side.
- Place patties back on the planks.
- Cover each patty with a slice of each cheese. Put the lid down until the cheese melts.
- Remove from grill carefully. Place on a platter to transfer to your work space.
- Place bottom buns on plates. Top each with a burger, onion rings, and lots and lots of bacon. Place top bun on each. Use a skewer to hold each burger together.
- Serve with a big old onion ring loving smile!

i'm embarrassed to answer the prompt because i've never come close to making a burger that could be described as epic! my favorite, though, is one with pepper jack cheese, guacamole, tomatoes, lettuce, and candied jalapenos.
Kim Beaulieu
Oh heck no, never hesitate to comment on anything on my blog. I'm super easy going and non-judgy! Your favourite sounds seriously epic. I'd chow down on that happily! Thanks for commenting and entering Grace. Have a fabulous day.
Charlie
Hi Kim!
This sounds delicious!
Although I have to be careful of having a burger piled too high, or my jaw will lock.
I think my favourite burger, or epic burger is one done with caramelized onions, smoked Gouda, and mushrooms (dried and fresh) done in a reduced merlot sauce.
So, so good!
Have a Joyful Day :~D

Hi Charlie. I know what you mean. I had to squash this sucker down to demolish it. Sometimes I wish my jaw would just open as wide as my mind wants it too. Ha.
I love the sound of your favourite burger. I would love to try that.
Have a fabulous day. Hope you're well. xx

Kim Beaulieu
That's my kind of burger Manda.
David
I like a bacon cheeseburger with the bacon and cheese sandwiched between two hamburger patties and instead if a bun, two grilled cheese sandwiches, one on top, one on the bottom.
Kim Beaulieu
Oh my gosh David, I want to have dinner at your house. That's impressive.
Betsy @ Desserts Required
Do I want a bite? Uh, NO! I want the whole burger!!!! Holy moly, Kim...you outdid yourself on this one. Have a great week with your baby boy!

Thanks girl. I had a blast making it. Miss K also made an epic sandwich the day we made these. I need to have her do it again so I can blog it.

This summer it has been my Bourbon BBQ Burger with Thick cut Bacon, Blue cheese and Frizzled Shallots on a Toasted Onion Roll....
Kim Beaulieu
Now that's a burger I can sink my teeth into.
Brownie
I like to ground bacon and mix it with my beef to make my patties. I then build with cheese, grilled onions and bacon. Lettuce, tomato and pickles are there for people to add.
Kim Beaulieu
You rule Brownie. I'd be over the moon for a burger like that one!
Nicole
a veggie burger on a pretzel roll with fried shoestring onions
Kim Beaulieu
Love pretzel buns. Going to make my own soon. So yummy. Also a big fan of shoestring onions. My daughter prefers onions rings but I tend to prefer onion strings. Easier to eat on a burger or something.
Nikki
I never used to be but then I tried your recipe: https://www.cravingsofalunatic.com/2013/11/onion-strings.html and I got hooked...when you can eat them cold the next day you know their good! haha
Kim Beaulieu
Hi Nikki. I am so happy you like them. I am in love with them too. Good hot or cold. Really good on burgers, seems odd but give it a whirl. You'll thank me.
ps you cracked me up and I needed that today. xx

Want some heart breaking news? Handsome hates onions....
I know, right?
Total cause for separation. I mean, who doesn't like a great onion sauteed in something.
Or in this case, super fried to crispy perfection. Now me, I am all in for onions. And this burger is like my dream. So bring it on baby! Let's have a full on girls grilling all in burger weekend!
Thank you for joining my burger loving celebration!
Kim Beaulieu
No freaking way, what the heck. Why is he so anti-onion. Now I feel sorry for you. An onion free existence is just not okay. Good thing he's a total hottie or you'd have to ditch him over this heinous onion hating problem.
I SO wish we could grill together one day. It'll happen....one day. I know it.
Thanks for allowing me to join the fun. Although now that I have my new computer I'm questioning ALL my photo skills and feeling like I suck at photography. They looked so good on my dell. They look heinous on my Mac. Not a happy girl.

THIS RECIPE IS DEFINITELY A MUST MAKE. MY ONLY PROBLEM IS NO GRILL AVAILABLE WITHIN MY APARTMENT COMPLEX. PLEEASE HELP-CAN I MAKE THIS INDOORS?
Kim Beaulieu
Hey! You can absolutely make any burger recipe indoors. I'd use a cast iron skillet. I do that a lot when it's snowing like crazy out. Cook over a medium high heat for the first few minutes as you sear the first side, turn down the heat to medium and allow to cook almost 3/4 of the way on the first side, (don't flip too much, better to only flip when you absolutely have to) then flip over and cook the rest of the way through on that side. Add your cheese at the end. If you happen to have a lid that fits your pan you can use the steam technique to melt the cheese. Restaurants use it a lot. Hot pan, add a couple of drops of water to the pan away from the burgers, put a lid over and it melts the cheese like a dream. They use that technique on griddles a lot. It works so well. Hope that helps. If you have any other questions let me know.
Frank
My wife uses your recipes a lot so I decided to look for some game day recipes. You did not disappoint. Bourbon bacon jam! That stuff is fire on top of burgers. Trying that next.
Anyhow, I took this for a test drive to see if it would be a good addition to our Super Bowl menu and hell yeah, we're adding it. Great burger recipe.
Kim Beaulieu
Ha, that bacon jam is the bomb. So glad you liked the burgers.
Jack
We've made these cheeseburgers twice now. They are so good.
Kim Beaulieu
Thanks so much. Glad you are loving them!
