Let me start by saying I have an amazing giveaway for you today. I was lucky enough to receive a 5 Piece Wüsthof Knife Set to review last month. Let’s just say I’ve been having far too much fun playing with knives. They sent me the Wüsthof Classic 5-piece Studio Block Set to try out.  It’s been an absolute joy to take these knives for a test ride. More on them later, first I need to tell you the back story to how this post came to be.

I have to start by saying how lucky I am to do what I do for a living.  My job is pure joy. I pinch myself every day that I get to play in the kitchen. One of the perks of food blogging is being given the opportunity to review products. I like playing with new toys as much as a kid, it’s endlessly entertaining. I have to admit most days it doesn’t feel like “work”, and I say that knowing how absolutely lucky I am.

I thought Wüsthof would be a great fit for an idea I had been pondering. My daughter’s birthday was approaching and I typically do a big birthday post for each of my kids on the blog. So my idea was to surprise my daughter, Mini-Me, with her favourite dish for her birthday. Most kids have favourite cakes or treats, not my hooligan. Mini-Me is a stir fry girl. She could eat it every day. She likes it kept simple and she likes it with noodles, not rice. After chatting with the powers that be, I was soon awaiting my Wüsthof knives with eager anticipation.

When they arrived and Mini-Me was let in on my secret plans she quickly declared the knives to be “hers” since I was doing it as a birthday surprise. I love my kids, any chance to wrangle my gear out of my hands is a good day for them. She still lives at home but has very boldly told me the knives will be moving out with her when the time comes. She’s quickly taken control of them. Every time I pull out my cutting board she sneaks in behind me and tiptoes off with the prized knives. It’s becoming a huge problem. One I find endlessly entertaining and endearing.

We began cutting everything we could get our hands on. This knives cut like a dream. We’re making up excuses to cut everything in the house. Want an orange, wait, I’ll cut it for you. Want an apple, hold on, let me grab one of my trusty knives. Need me to cut up your steak for you, sure, just let me grab my favourite knife. I swear there’s arm wrestling matches breaking out over who gets to use them.

This family is rough on kitchen tools. Any review I do is going to be thorough. I have two young adults I like to refer to as my hooligans. Mini-Me lives here, and my son, B-Dude, is out west getting his PHD. He came home over the  holidays. So these knives were used and abused in a big way over the course of the last few weeks. They stood up to all of it.

They cut like a dream. I’m so impressed with the how they pull through everything I slice with them. I cook way too much and I’ve not had one bad experience with these knives. The weight is perfect, which is super important. The handles are easy to grip. The block is not only functional but cute. I’m a girl at heart, I like cute things. The scissors are absolutely perfect. I have to keep grabbing them away from hubs who wants to cut tin cans with them for some reason. I swear my family has weirder quirks than I do.

The set includes a 3.5-inch paring knife, 4.5-inch utility knife, and 6-inch cook’s knife, along with kitchen shears and a 4 slot block. I have a weird fondness for large knives. I use the cook’s knife for everything. Mini-Me loves the paring knife and hubs keeps stealing the utility knife. We are all so very impressed with this Wüsthof Knife Set. I cannot recommend them enough. I’m already adding more pieces to my wish list. I keep leaving photos of different sets taped all over the house. I’m nothing if not subtle.

If you are a stir fry fan like my daughter this recipe is for you. I do subtle variations of it all the time. I like more veggies in mine but since this was her special day I did it her way. Just the way she likes it. Simple, full of flavour and absolutely delicious.

A simple recipe for steak stir fry that will wow your guests and become a family favourite. This is my daughter's special recipe, one she requests often.
  • 1 pound of good quality beef, I used striploin since we had lots on hand, cut into thin strips
  • ¼ cup Italian Salad Dressing, seems odd but amazing as a marinade
  • 1 large sweet onion, either diced or cut into thin strips
  • 3 shallots, cut into thin strips
  • 1 red bell pepper, cut into thin strips
  • 1 green bell pepper, cut into thin strips
  • 1 orange bell pepper, cut into thin strips
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cloves of fresh garlic, or 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • ¼ cup Teriyaki Sauce
  • 2 cups prepared noodles or rice
  1. If preparing rice and/or noodles start those now. That way it all times out perfectly. We usually do both. I like rice and my daughter like noodles.
  2. Cut up your beef. Pop it into a glass bowl. Pour Italian Dressing over top. Mix really well with a spoon. Let it stand for about 10 minutes.
  3. While the meat is resting you can cut up your veggies. I like to dice my onions, then I like to have odd pieces that are a bit bigger, I find that the layering of textures with some onions being cooked soft and some with just a bit more crispness left is really amazing. I do this often with onions as well. about two thirds are cut into strips, and the other third of them I leave in chunkier pieces. The peppers I like uniformly cut into thin strips though. Just a personal thing.
  4. Drain any excess marinade from the beef.
  5. Now take a wok or large skillet and add some oil, I like olive oil but you can use canola or vegetable oil. Let that get hot, it should sizzle a bit and get this glimmer over the oil.
  6. Now carefully add your beef, if the pan is small do it in two or three batches. Don't overcrowd when stir frying, the trick is to get a good hot sear which is impossible if the pan is overcrowded.
  7. Cook each batch until it's perfectly browned. This only take a few minutes if your pan is hot and not crowded.
  8. Now transfer the meat to a bowl for the time being. Set aside.
  9. Add you onions and shallots to the same pan, don't wash it, you want that yummy goodness, there's flavour in that. I add about 1 tablespoon of butter and a dash of salt when browning the onions and shallots. Works wonders. Cook for about 3 to 5 minutes over a medium-high heat.
  10. Now toss in the peppers and if needed you can add some olive oil. Toss and cook over medium-high heat for about 2 to 4 minutes.
  11. Add the garlic and cook for less than 1 minute, it should be fragrant but not burning. It cooks really fast.
  12. Now toss your meat back in the pan.
  13. Season quickly with salt and pepper.
  14. Add the teriyaki sauce and continue to cook for about 3 to 4 minutes, you want everything to come together nicely.
  15. Poured over prepared rice or noodles of your choice.
  16. Serve with a big old I love my new Wüsthof Knives smile!

Absolute perfection. I sure hope you get a chance to try this. We never make it exactly the same. We’re always changing up veggies based on the seasons. It has endless variations which is what I think we love about stir fry. Plus it is so easy to prepare. If I have my prep done really well I can make a stir fry in under 30 minutes. That’s perfect for a family as busy as ours is.

I can tell you from trying these out that I can recommend these to anyone. I am seriously already planning out which of their products I want next. I’m thinking ALL of them would be really nice. I figure aim high and dream big right.

Hmm, that’s a tough one. Most likely the 6 in cooks knife but the paring knife would get used a LOT too :) just like the rest

  2. MaryB says

The cook’s knife would probably be the most used in my kitchen. What a great giveaway! Thanks for the chance to wine.

    • Kim Beaulieu says

Their knives rock. I am in love with mine, when mini-me lets me use them. Ha. I

We are huge stir fry people here. At least once a week we make them.

  3. Deb Wilson says

I’m going to make this stir fry for dinner tonight! Looks yummy and easy!!! I think that the cooks knife would be the one that gets the biggest workout in our kitchen!!!

    • Kim Beaulieu says

It is so easy. We make stir fry at least once a week. Simple, fast and healthy. The cooks knife is fabulous. Good luck Deb.

  4. Pam Gurganus says

The type of Wüsthof Knife I would use most is the 6-inch cook’s knife! Thank you for this awesome giveaway opportunity…I sooo need new knives, but have been on the fence which brand to buy, etc. Your review has really helped me out. Thank you too for the recipe and I wanted to say I love your dish and chopsticks…they’re gorgeous! :)

    • Kim Beaulieu says

I love the cooks knife. It gets a workout here.

You are most welcome. I enjoy doing these. This is my first quality knife set. I really like it.

And thanks. That set was from a pottery store we visit once per year, it’s in St Jacobs Ontario. I love that it has holes built into it that house the chopsticks. It’s wicked cool.

When people ask me to recommend the bestest kitchen equipment, I always say “good knives!” They cut your prep time in half, and make everything easier. I can’t say enough about them.

Also, when you have good knives, you can say things like, “don’t touch that knife, you aren’t ready yet.” It’s very satisfying.

    • Kim Beaulieu says

It really does. I have never had good ones before so this was life changing.

I’m totally doing that next time someone comes over. I can’t freaking wait.

  6. Anonymous says

I love these knives. I would use the chef’s knife a lot and the paring knife. I could use some good knives as mine are very old and well-used. Thanks for the chance to win these.

  7. Liz says

What a great gift. I love these knives. I would use the chef’s knife a lot and the paring knife. I really need some new knives as mine are very old and well-used. Thanks for the chance to win these.

  8. says

Your stir fry looks beyond amazing! I’ve drooled over a knife set like this more times than I can count. Everyone needs a good chef’s knife, and I’m no exception! Those kitchen shears would become my best friend, though!

  9. Mandy Shannon says

Oh Mini-Me is my kinda girl! Stir fry or fajitas are my “soul” food, and have to eat the stir fry with Noodles! Oh Yum, I’m hungry now haha. 6in cooks knife will get the most use in my kitchen, paring knife in 2nd :) thanx for this delightful post!

    • Kim Beaulieu says

She is awesome. She loves fajitas too. And noodles are the only way she does stir fry. You two must have been separated at birth. Lol.

      Good luck Mandy.

  10. says

Wüsthof knives are great. Although I managed to break the tip off my chef’s knife – which makes it almost impossible to use (you wouldn’t believe how often you need that tip!). Anyway, who doesn’t like a meaty stir-fry? Great dish – thanks.

    • Kim Beaulieu says

I have a knife with a missing tip as well. It’s a pain in the rump. Yet I can’t bring myself to get rid of it.

We love stir fry, just can’t get enough of it here.

  11. Cynthia says

Looks so good! Can’t wait to try it next weekend! And as for the knives… I’ve had 3 sets of Wüsthof and I’ve loved every one!!!

  12. Pam Sohan says

Ooooo I need some really good knives. They are one of those things we keep saying we are going to get but somehow it always falls below something else. I think the cook’s knife would get the most use.

    • Kim Beaulieu says

That’s how we are too. I will say it makes a huge difference to have a good set. I don’t bother with my other ones any more. I reach past them for these ones consistently.

  13. Sally Tews says

I sure would love to win this beautiful knive set~they would fit in my kichen just fine 😉
I know I would use the cooks knife most often. Keeping my fingers crossed until I WIN~ :-) :-)

  14. Marlene says

I have the Santoku and I love it! I recently told my husband I need to add more pieces! This stir fry recipe looks delish!

  15. says

Oooh, I just stumbled on this blog via Pinterest today! I would get so much use out of a new knife set — my current set is embarassingly dull and of poor quality:(

    • Kim Beaulieu says

So glad you found me. Most of my knives are horrible too. And I think I have about 200 of them. It’s crazy how many I have.

      Good luck Kelly.

  16. Lana says

This recipe looks great! I prefer my stir fry with noodles instead of rice, too. I’m excited to try making this!

    • Kim Beaulieu says

Thank you. You’d get along with mini-me well, it’s the only way she’ll eat hers. Hope you love this.

  17. Tina W says

The Cooks knife would be the one I’d use most. (my sister always laughs at me doing tiny jobs with a big ol’ knife but it works for me!)

  18. Jaye Lorton says

I would definitely use the cook’s knife the most, with the paring knife coming in at a close second! Man oh man do I need new knives! Thanks for offering!

  19. Traci says

Would you please share with me where you got those two lovely pieces of pottery or who the artists are? I love them! Thank you!!

    • Kim Beaulieu says

I can try to find the name but it’s a pottery store in St. Jacobs Ontario. We visit once a year so I always buy 1 piece each year. I cannot think of the name of it off the top of my head. When I hit my office next I’ll peek.

  20. Kristen M says

I have a Wusthof paring knife that I use all the time. I love it. I think I would equally enjoy the shears and cook’s knife.

  21. Tracy Spangler says

I would use the 6-inch cook’s knife the most. My sweet husband just bought me a knife set that was heavily discounted at the store-unfortunately it’s obvious why they were so cheap as they barely cut a thing! I would love a set of good knives to use every day! Thank you!

  22. Melissa Plemmons says

I am definitely making the stir fry for dinner on Tuesday. It looks delicious! I would use the cook’s knife the most. It would work for most things. The paring knife would come in a close second, though.

  23. LIsa Boyd says

I know the contest is over (always late for the good stuff!) but I have to ask you where you got the lovely bowls you featured in this stir fry. I love them! Oh and the recipe looks great too!!

    • Kim Beaulieu says

Hi Lisa. Thanks so much. I get a lot of requests about the bowls. They are both from the same pottery store in St Jacobs Ontario. I’ll see if I can grab the name off of one of them this week and post it. We visit there once a year and I always buy 1 new piece each year. They make amazing stuff.
