I was beyond thrilled when I received an email inviting me to join The Great Shake 2012. It's a milkshake party to celebrate Adam Ried's paperback release of Thoroughly Modern Milkshakes: 100 Thick and Creamy Shakes You Can Make at Home. I'm not going to lie, I about fell off my chair to be included.
You must know who Adam Ried is, otherwise you might just be living under a rock. So I jumped at the chance to join the fun and knowing me will probably embarrass myself completely before the campaign is over. It's how I roll. I have to admit to having a small crush. It happens. What's a girl to do. It's okay, my stalker status is in check. For now.
ABOUT THE BOOK: The time-honored combination of milk, ice cream, and syrup has satisfied ice cream lovers for generations. In this collection of 100 new recipes, Adam Ried brings America’s favorite concoction into the twenty-first century with familiar ingredients turned into foolproof shakes. Featuring a wide range of blended treats such as the bold Mexican Chocolate Shake with Chipotle and Almond and the traditional Malted Caramel,Thoroughly Modern Milkshakes gives us a whole new take on the shake.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Adam Ried is a columnist for the Sunday Boston Globe Magazineand a regular guest on America’s Test Kitchen and Cook’s Country from America’s Test Kitchen. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
In the effort of full disclosure I am receiving the book free to try out. I'd love to wax on about how much I love it. But I am honest to a fault so here's the deal, I......I...um... am still waiting for mine. Lol. Okay you thought I was going to say I disliked it right. Seriously folks, it's a book about milkshakes! Which are made from ice cream. Which you all know how much I love. So much that I've been posting Ice Cream Sundays for a year now. Anyhow it's on its way but apparently us Canucks still have our mail delivered by the Pony Express so it's not physically here yet. The lovely Judy sent me a list of oodles of choices and I knew immediately I wanted to make the Black Forest Shake. I think it took me about .003 seconds to tell her that was the one for me. So I got my recipe via email till my pony delivers my book. Which I'm sure I'll love and will share more from over the summer. I'm sure it's going to inspire tons more shakes from yours truly. I Â mean it is Adam making them after. And when you not so secret crush makes a book about milkshakes, well, you shake it up folks. You shake it up like you've never shaken it before. Is it just me or is this getting horribly inappropriate. Moving on.
So I made this wonderful Black Forest Shake. I have such a weakness for all things cherry. It was just the obvious choice for me. I love this shake. I mean I cannot rave enough about it. Thick and creamy and oh so dreamy. So pull out that blender you've got hiding in the cupboard folks. Take it for a whir. You will not be sorry.
Black Forest Shake for #GreatShakes 2012
Ingredients
- ½ cup cold cherry juice about 4 ounces
- 2 tablespoons cherry preserves about 1 ounce
- ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 4 medium scoops cherry-vanilla ice cream about 1 pint/12 ounces, softened until just melty at the edges
- 4 medium scoops chocolate sorbet about 1 pint/12 ounces, softened until just melty at the edges
Instructions
- Pour the cherry juice, preserves, and vanilla extract in your blender.
- Blend so it mixes well, about 30 seconds.
- Add the ice cream and sorbet, pulse several times which will start breaking the ice cream up.
- Turn the blender motor off and use a flexible spatula to mash the mixture down onto the blender blades.
- Place lid back on and continue pulsing, stop if need be to mash the mixture up.
- Pulse again. You will know it's done when it is thick, and moves easily in the blender jar. Should take about 30 to 90 seconds .
- Pour into a chilled glass or glasses.
- Serve with a big old black forest smile!
Notes
I would to thank Adam and W. W. Norton & Company for this wonderful opportunity. I had a blast being involved and shaking things up. I encourage everyone to shake things up as well.
Today at 8 PM Eastern/5 PM Pacific, Thoroughly Modern Milkshakes author Adam Ried will be on Twitter. You’ll have a chance to chat with Adam and fellow partygoers about his shakes. Just follow the #GreatShakes hashtag!
So get to shaking. You will thank me later. I think I behaved totally normal and managed to dodge the bullet of pure embarrassment. I'm also quite certain my little crush is being kept a big secret and no one will ever know.
Full Disclosure: I received a free copy of this cookbook from the publisher.  All opinions included in this post are mine. I am after all, an honest Lunatic!

Black Forest? Brilliant! If anyone should be selected to participate...it's you - you are the milkshake queen!
Kim Bee
I jumped all over the Black Forest. As soon as they told me it was an option I jumped on it. Thanks my dear. I love me some milkshake.
Suzanne Perazzini
Looks too scrumptious for words. I've never seen cherry juice down here. Maybe I could make my own if it were cherry season here. Too sad.
Kim Bee
Cherry seltzer works. I have the same problem. I can't find it in town. Occasionally in the city. I'd just skip them and add more preserves or jam.
Deborah
I have to try this one!! And I love the cherry message!
Kim Bee
Thanks so much. I had a blast with the photos.
Nami | Just One Cookbook

Glad you're having fun with the book. Will you be profiling more shakes from the book?
Kim Bee
Once I get the actual book in the mail I may. Regardless I'll always make milkshakes. It's just fun over the summer. I adore making them.
Medeja
I have same weakness for cherries, so this shake looks just divine 🙂
Kim Bee
Thanks so much. I am just chomping at the bit for the rainiers to come out.
Carol Anne @ Rock Salt
Ha - that last picture is hysterical. I probably would have chosen a black forest shake too, cherries are totally my favourite.
Kim Bee
Thanks. I had a little fun with the author. This is a great recipe. Really loved doing it.
mellissa @ ibreatheimhungry
Had me cracking up as usual girl! Loved it! This shake sounds delicious and I bet I can find a way to make it semi-low carb so I'm all for it!
Kim Bee
Thanks Mellz. I had fun with this. Oh, low carb shakes. I may have to try that.
Anita at Hungry Couple
YOU need a book on how to make ice cream milkshakes?? I think you should start writing one. 🙂

Kim Bee
It is the bomb. Love Black Forest.
kale
Love the cherry message, haha 🙂
Kim Bee
Thanks. I had some fun.
Emily @ Life on Food
I cannot believe there is a whole book on just milkshakes. I love it! This is a great recipe. I would not have thought to add juice to a milkshake for more flavor but it is a wonderful idea. I can see the cherry going perfectly with the chocolate.
Kim Bee
Right! So good though. I mean who doesn't love milkshakes. Juice is a great way to perk it up. I have a post coming soon that will give another trick.
