    homemade dog treat

So today I have the sweetest, cutest possible guest post in the world for you. You will overdose on cuteness today. You will also laugh your butt off. I have the very talented, and wickedly witty Anita from Hungry Couple guest posting today.

I met Anita through Foodbuzz and fell in love with her blog, and Anita herself. I would describe her as a bit snarky and sarcastic, which I am a huge fan of. I like funny blogs, ones that inject humour into things. I also love her cocktails which is weird since I can't drink. But I find myself invariably drawn to all the pretty drinks on her blog. One of these days I'm gonna crack, make them all and end up at the doctor's crying the blues with a sarcastic, hung over look on my face. It's bound to happen.

Anita makes some fabulous drinks like her Watermelon Martini. She also whips up amazing food like The Ultimate Macaroni Salad, Cheesy Beef Tortilla Cups, and her Roasted Cauliflower. She also includes some decadent desserts like her German Cheesecake. She is incredibly talented in the kitchen. Her hubby is incredibly talented as well. I love that they are a team and he fully supports her blog and love of food and drink. It warms my heart to see people so happy. They also share residence with one seriously cute puppy. A King Cavalier Spaniel who is cute as a button. One of these days I think Hadley and Malia need to meet. It's destiny. I mean a puppy who whips up puppy treats for another puppy is pretty sweet in my book. Please welcome Anita and Hadley to the asylum.

    ***********************************************************************************************************************************************

Hi folks, I'm so happy to be here at the asylum today guest posting for the vacationing lunatic.  Kim is always such a funny read and all her food is fattening so what's not to love?  However, reading her is one thing and cooking for her is another.  If you're a regular fan then you know that Kim is an annoying, fussy, picky food whacko!  (She's away on vacation, right?  I mean, she's not reading this, is she?)

Anyway, what to cook for a lunatic?  She said her blog was light on cocktails but she doesn't drink so what's the point?  Dessert?  Nah, she's already shoulder deep in homemade ice cream and various cakes stuffed into jars.  Something healthy?  Hahahahaha...  Plus, she doesn't like her food touching, or people touching or people touching her food.  Oh, dear!  In the end, I decided that I was way too busy to figure it out and I got someone else to do it for me.  That's right, folks, what we have here is a guest poster taking over for another guest poster.  And, in this case, my trusty four legged sous chef will be filling in for me.  Take it away, Sous Chef Hadley...

Woof, woof everybody!  Chef mommy told me that her friend Kim Lunatic has a doggie named Malia so today we're going to make some yummy cookies for her.  You could buy treats in the doggie store but chef mommy says they're full of preservatisms and sometimes those things make me sick and I get a tummy ache and mommy and daddy have to take me to the doctor who gives me icky medicine and then I have to listen to daddy go on for days about how much it costs.

I don't want anything like that to happen to Malia so today we're going to make some healthy cookies with no chemistricals or additionatives.  They're extra good because they're kind of like sweet potato pie, which mommy won't let me have, but I can have these!  They're also really easy to make because they don't have a lot of ingredientses.  You can make the cookies any shape and they taste the same but I like these bone shaped ones the bestest.  Mommy also put sweet glaze on some of them to make them extra good but I like them both ways.

Anyway, Malia, I hope you think these are yummy in your tummy and maybe you'll even share them with me if I come to visit?  Right now, chef mommy is going to explain how we made these.  Woof, woof!

Sweet Potato Doggie Biscuits: Guest Post by Hungry Couple

A wonderful recipe for healthy dog treats by Hungry Couple!

    Ingredients

    • 2 Cups whole wheat flour plus extra for rolling out the dough
    • 1 cup mashed sweet potato pumpkin would work, too
    • ¼ Cup low fat milk
    • 1 Egg
    • Optional Glaze:
    • ¼ Cup confectioner’s sugar
    • 1 Tablespoon low fat milk

    Instructions

    • In a bowl, mix together the egg and milk. Add the mashed sweet potato and whisk until combined. Slowly add in the flour and work into a dough. Cover with plastic and refrigerate for approximately an hour.
    • On a floured surface, roll out the dough to approximately ¼” thickness and cut out desired shapes. This dough is not very sticky and cuts nicely. You can also re-roll the remnants to make more cookies. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in a pre-heated 350 degree oven for 25 minutes. The cookies will be a little soft when they’re first out of the oven but will harden as they cool.
    • If desired, whisk together the confectioner’s sugar and milk and drizzle over the cooled cookies. It’s best to only ice those cookies you’re about to use because they will get soft if stored. Makes approximately 40 large (3?) or 60 small (2?) cookies.

Thank you so much to Anita and Hadley for guest posting for me today. I could not be more thrilled with their creativity. I bet Malia cannot wait for me to get home from my trip so I can whip these up for her. It's such a cool idea to make homemade dog treats. I've done homemade horse treats a bunch, but only made dog treats once. So this goes on "the list" for when we get home. You two outdid yourself. And Malia says thank you.

I would love to encourage you all to stop by Anita's blog, Hungry Couple and make sure you follow her by email or RSS so you get her lovely goodies delivered to you automatically. I would also make sure you stalk her on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Google+. Stalk her everywhere like I do.

Today we are on our 2nd day of driving. It's a long trip from Ontario to Alberta. Hopefully the last push tomorrow gets us to our destination. I was determined to drive through North Dakota and Montana so we've mapped it out so we can do that. You know me and horse country. Makes me miss Gingy something awful. I'm missing Malia, Spark, Spike and Castiel too. And hopefully the birds are doing okay without mini-me there. We've arranged for a gazillion people to oversee our little zoo. Hopefully they don't all miss us as much as we'll miss them. I guess I'll have to bake copious amounts of pet treats when I return. This should be fun.

    Toodles and smoochies! xx

Oh my god. I love it. LOVE IT! That picture of Hadley is to die for. Can Sir Pugsley join this party? Although watch out, he is a pug and might eat all those biscuits before anyone else gets their paws on them (oh I crack myself up 🙂 )

Thanks, Susan! Hadley is a surprisingly patient photo model. She's less cooperative, though, when I'm trying to photograph the biscuits she desperately wants. 🙂 Lots of cropping was involved to edit out a puppy nose. 🙂

Anita, you could not have chosen a more perfect post for The Lunatic. Dog treats are just crazy enough for her delightful blog. It's hard to figure out how 3 dogs as lazy as ours always seem to have an appetite but they'll enjoy these without doubt.

Thank you Lunie for bringing such a delightful and creative guest to share with us all.

OKAY! You got me here! I have a baby sister, and her name is Penny. She is a little white Maltese cross and so adorable - now 11 years old, but still the smartest one in the family. We call her our little ball of family therapy. Since mom and dad got her, everyone's visits to them have increased 10 times. Gotta make these for Penny!

Ramona - I tasted the biscuits and they're not bad but a human palate will miss the butter and the salt. Your 4 legged family members, however, will love them as they are. On my blog I also have a peanut butter version that is more appealing to humans because the pb has a lot of natural oil.

Saw this on Pinterest and I'm excited to make them. Our dogs love Sweet Potatoe but since we don't buy anything other than made in the USA for them we haven't found a really good sweet potatoe treat that they like as much as one that was made in China. Hope these do the trick.

Great article! I love making some healthy treats for my fur babies. Even after breaking some ornamental and other furniture in the house still, they deserve a treat 🙂 it's a long day for them anyway. Thank you for this another recipe that you've shared, I will try this, and I hope they'll also like this.
