Nutella Muddy Buddies AKA Nutella Puppy Chow is sure to be a hit with kids and adults alike. Make a double batch because this stuff is addictive!

I love Nutella. It's one of life's simple pleasures.

There is just something about the taste of it that makes me swoon. I love baking with it, and I love just eating it right out of the jar with a spoon.

I'm also obsessed with cereal. I rarely eat cereal for breakfast. However, I bake with it endlessly. I'm not sure why. I just happen to find baking with cereal a ton of fun.

For me, the ultimate cereal shopping experience is heading state-side to shop. The cereal choices in the U.S. are far superior to our choice here in Canada. Not even kidding. The U.S. grocery stores are like Disneyland for cereal lovers.

Every time we head over there to shop I lose my mind. Once I hit the cereal aisle I start to come unglued.

All the choices, all those options, I just can't keep it together. I honestly start to skip through the aisles at some point. I can't help myself.

We always pick up Trix Cereal, as well as any other fun, bright, colourful cereal we see. Fruity Pebbles is another favourite. It's so fun and pretty, plus the taste is out of this world.

This recipe was so fun to make. Chex is perfect for making muddy buddies or puppy chow. It's so easy to make. Whip some up for your next party or for game day!

These Nutella Muddy Buddies can also be found on Food Fanatic. I used to be their chocolate fanatic.

    Ingredient List:

    • Chex Cereal - You can use Rice or Corn Chex for this recipe. If you cannot find Chex cereal you can use Shreddies or Crispix. Since I live in Canada, I know finding Chex can be challenging in some places.
    • Chocolate Chips - Either semi-sweet chocolate chips or milk chocolate chips work for this recipe.
    • Nutella - Any hazelnut spread will do. Personally, I prefer the taste of Nutella.
    • Butter - You can use salted or unsalted butter in this recipe. Typically, I use salted butter for snack mixes because I love sweet and salty snacks. Plus salt enhances sweetness so it helps make the Nutella and chocolate flavour pop!
    • Vanilla Extract - Any brand will work in this snack mix. You could also use almond extract. It mixes well with chocolate flavours.
    • Confectioners' Sugar - This is also called powdered sugar or icing sugar in some places. Do not try to substitute granulated sugar. It will not work.

How to Make Nutella Muddy Buddies:

    1. Grab a cookie sheet, line it with parchment paper or waxed paper. Set aside.
    2. Measure out 9 cups of Chex cereal and pour that into a large bowl. Set aside.
    3. Grab a microwave safe bowl and add the chocolate chips, Nutella and butter to it. Pop that in the microwave and cook for about 1 minutes. Remove and stir. Then, microwave for another 30 seconds, or until the mixture is smooth. Since every microwave is different I recommend checking often and stirring to ensure it's smooth and does not overcook. The mixture should be smooth when you mix it, and quite easy to stir.
    4. Next, add the vanilla extract to the Nutella mixture and stir to combine. Pour that mixture over top of the Chex cereal you set aside earlier. Stir until it's combined really.
    5. Grab a large resealable ziploc bag and toss the Chex mixture into it. Then, add the confectioners' sugar to the bag and seal it really well. Start shaking the bag until the confectioners' sugar coats the cereal evenly.
    6. Grab the parchment lined cookie sheet you set aside earlier. Carefully pour the Nutella muddy buddies onto the cookie sheet and spread out as evenly as you can. Allow the muddy buddies to cool on the pan.
    7. Serve or store for later.

    How to Store Muddy Buddies:

Once properly cooled, you can store muddy buddies in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. Alternately, you can store muddy buddies in a resealable bag for up to 2 weeks.

These muddy buddies can also be stored in airtight container or resealable bag in the refrigerator for up to a month. Not only do they keep longer in the fridge but they taste great cold.

Muddy buddies can also be frozen. Which is great news if you like to plan ahead for holidays. Store muddy buddies in an airtight container or resealable bag in the freezer for up to 3 months.

I don't blame him one bit. They make a great snack. Hope you make them for him. He would love these. They are, by far, my favourite flavour.

Hi, I think this should have taken just a few minutes. My microwave must be very powerful because at 1 minute my Nutella, chocolate chips and butter was cooked, definitely not pourable and not even spreadable so I started over using a double boiler and had the same problem, as soon as the chocolate started to melt, the texture was like thick frosting. I ended up melting just a little more chocolate with a lot of butter added to the thick mixture and saved it. Not sure what a did wrong.

Hi Beverly. Thanks for letting me know. I'll remake this on the weekend and see if there's something up with the way the recipe is written. I'll keep you posted.
