How to make bacon bits quickly and easily at home. You can use them on salads, or keep them on hand for quick bacon pizza bites as an after school snack.
Okay, I'm going to be honest here. I mean why hold back. But I feel like everyone already knows how to make these.
Yet my friend told me she had no idea how to make them at home. Colour me surprised.
So I jumped up immediately and made some bacon.
Then smashed it to smithereens. I'm not going to lie. Making bacon bits is oodles of fun.
First you eat cook a pound of bacon. Then, you break up whatever you didn't eat.
You can pop the bits in the fridge, the freezer or your mouth. Your call. No judgement here.
If you're anything like me you always buy three times as much bacon as needed. I can never resist bacon.
Honestly, I think I ate my weight in bacon this month.
Personal Stuff Readers Hate Below:
On a personal note, my hooligans gave me a heart attack today. I was zipping off to a hair appointment because the hooligans were going to play paintball with friends.
We're always nervous letting our son drive as he has such horrible luck behind the wheel. We relented and let him take the van.
Not 15 minutes we get a call. My daughter saying they were in an accident.
Luckily everyone is okay, thank goodness. Some gal was not paying attention and rear-ended them. So, today was stressful.
They have to head down to the police station on Tuesday to file a report. Apparently the police were so overloaded today they were scheduling appointments for later in the week.
Weird right. Luckily they fit B-Dude in since he leaves on Wednesday to head out west for school.
Okay my lovely peeps, I need to rock n roll. Tomorrow we are moving horsey to a new barn.
Let's just say Ginger and horse trailers don't get along. Ginger and new environments don't get along. And Ginger and new horses don't get along. Ginger does not like change.
It should be a good move. Apart from the trailer loading.

How to Make Bacon Bits
Equipment
Instructions
- In a cast iron skillet, or frying pan, cook bacon over medium heat.
- Cook first side until it's golden brown, or to your own liking, some people like theirs a bit undercooked, some people like me like theirs a little overcooked. It's personal preference. Once it's golden brown, flip it over and continue to cook the other side until it's golden brown too.
- Turn off the heat, remove pan from the stove, transfer the bacon carefully to a plate lined with napkins to help absorb excess grease. Allow to cool, and dab with more paper towels to make sure all grease is gone.
- Now you can chop the bacon up on a cutting board to your desired bacon bit size. I actually cut mine with kitchen shears. It's how I roll. Life on the edge, man.
- Pop the bacon bits into small containers, then pop on a lid. You can store cooked bacon bits in the fridge for about 3 days (if they last that long), or in your freezer for a couple of months.
- This is the ideal way to always have bacon bits on hand for when you get a craving.
- They are the bomb on pizza bites. Not even kidding.
- Serve with a bit old "I ate all the bacon and I don't even feel bad" smile!

Ha, no kidding right. I thin I made over 20 pounds of bacon during bacon month. Wild month.
I love mine crispy, it's just so addictive. I can't resist crispy bacon.

om NOM NOM--bacon bits are verryyy versatile. Pretty sure Michael wouldn't mind if I sprinkled them on everything 😛
Kim Beaulieu
I know right. I think we should market them like jimmies.
John@Kitchen Riffs
Sorry about B-Dude's accident! Maybe Minnie-Me should drive instead. 😉 And I hope things go well with moving your horsey. Good recipe for bacon bits -- I make mine the same way. 😉
Kim Beaulieu
Thanks, and ha, no doubt right. Thank goodness they were okay. That is a phone call that makes your heart drop into your stomach.
Horsey moved awesome. The barn owner was completely rude and obnoxious, but horsey behaved like a champ. So glad to be at a new place. No room in my life for other people's drama.
Aren't bacon bits awesome. I think they qualify as candy right.
Annamaria @ Bakewell Junction
Kim,
My problem is that I wouldn't have any bacon bits to store for when I need them. I'd eat them all. Maybe I should start with 2 or 3 pounds of bacon.
Annamaria
Kim Beaulieu
Ha, that is always my problem. I always have to start off with 10 x the amount of bacon I need. I can never stop sampling.
Stephanie @ Eat. Drink. Love.
I want to put bacon bits on all of the things!
Kim Beaulieu
I concur.

Bacon is my guilty pleasure as well. I just put this on a pizza on my blog too as a matter of fact! Homeade is way better than the packaged store bought! I'm glad you are informing the world they can make this at home! 🙂
Kim Beaulieu
Exactly, this is really a public service announcement disguised as a recipe. I'm with you on bacon pizza, it's my jam.
Tracy
The only trouble I have when making Bacon Bits is that they disappear just a s fast as I make them.
Kim Beaulieu
Ha, me too. And I can't even blame my kids, it's usually me.
Heather // girlichef
I joke not, these would not last a day in my house. Pretty sure all the kids would pop 'em like mints.
Kim Beaulieu
Lol Heather. I can't even blame the kids, it's totally me popping them like candy.
Ginny McMeans
You are so funny. You instructions for explaining something so simple are perfect. 🙂
Kim Beaulieu
Thanks. I have far too much fun blogging.
Angie | Big Bear's Wife
I love making homemade bacon bits! I think they taste better than those store bought ones!
Kim Beaulieu
I know right. The store bought are so icky after you make your own!
Anita
Love the instructions! And so much better than the pre made ones!
Kim Beaulieu
Thanks, I forget I'm suppose to be all "professional" sometimes.
Cate @ Chez CateyLou
I can never resist bacon, either! Especially when it is so crispy like this. I would put these bacon bits on anything!!
