How to Toast Pistachios in the oven. Perfectly toasted pistachios are quick and easy to make, plus it enhances their natural flavour.
Learning how to toast pistachios is super handy, especially if you bake often! Honestly, toasted nuts are incredibly simple to make.
Welcome to the blog. Today is a very special day. We're celebrating Grab Some Nuts Day. It's an actual food holiday. Who knew?
When I found out Grab Some Nuts Day was coming up I knew I had to celebrate with some of my nutty friends. So I put together a small group of bloggers who wanted to grab some nuts with me. I mean who wants to grab nuts all by themselves right?
We all came up with some nut packed recipes for you to celebrate this hilariously weird food holiday. I love that I have friends who appreciate a good laugh, and the opportunity for nutty puns. These folks have kept me giggling through a rough week. Thank goodness for nutty friends.
Grab Some Nuts Day should be a yearly event if you ask me. We have a whole year to work on our nuts before the next event. We should all get cracking on that.
Why Do You Toast Nuts
- When you toast nuts it releases oils which makes them more fragrant and full of flavour.
- Toasting them also improves their texture which makes them perfect for baking. The improved texture also allows them to stay crisp when used in salads and cooking.
Ingredients
- Pistachios: That's it.
Directions
Be sure to scroll to the recipe card for FULL ingredients and directions!
- Preheat oven.
- Spread pistachios on a rimmed cookie sheet.
- Place the pistachios in the preheated oven.
- Bake.
- Remove from oven and transfer pistachios on a towel. Rub to remove skins.
- Allow to cool.
- Enjoy!
Tips:
- Some people toast nuts at a higher temperature like 400 degrees F. Personally, I prefer to toast mine at 350 degrees F so there is less chance they will overcook and burn.
- Do not use oils or spray on your pan. You can use parchment if you feel the need.
- Make sure you spread them out evenly in one layer on your cookie sheet. Don't crowd or have multiple layers.
- Do not walk away while they toast. Nuts can go from perfection to burnt very quickly. They are far too expensive to risk burning them.
- You don't have to turn then over halfway through toasting but I like to. To be clear, that's just a personal choice.
- Once they are toasted use a clean dish towel to rub the skins off the pistachios. Do this while they are still warm. The skins will come off easier.
- Allow them to cool.
- Store them.
How to Toast them on the Stovetop
- Use the same temperature and technique but use a frying pan or large skillet.
- Do not add oil.
- Don't overcrowd and spread evenly.
- Stay close. Walking away is never a good idea when toasting nuts.
- Stir occasionally or just shake the pan every so often.
- Use a clean tea towel to remove skins.
- Allow to cool.
- Store them.
How to Store
- Toasted nuts can be stored in an airtight container for one week.
- You can also store them in the freezer. This keeps them fresh longer and keeps them from going rancid.

How to Toast Pistachios
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Spread the pistachios evenly on a rimmed cookie sheet. Place in the preheated oven for about 8 to 10 minutes. Start checking on them early, just in case your oven has hot spots. You can give the a quick turn halfway through if you like but it's not required.
- Once the pistachios are toasted and smell fragrant you can remove them from oven and transfer to a clean tea towel.
- In order to remove the skins from the pistachios all you have to do is rub them with the towel while they are still warm. The pieces will slide right off. Just remember, it's easiest to do this when the pistachios are warm. (so many jokes, so little time)
- Let the pistachios cool before storing them.
- Serve with a big old Grab Some Nuts Day smile!

I'm so disappointed I couldn't join this year, Kim, but all my nutty jokes and not-so-subtle innuendos will keep for next year! These photos are beautiful. I wish I could reach through my screen and grab your toasty nuts. I'd love to have them in my mouth. They're probably super firm, warm and salty. Just how I like 'em.

John came home last week with a big bag of shelled pistachios. I had the same idea to roast them and then proceeded to watch a movie and ate every single one of them. I felt guilt but only a little bit.
Ellie
Did you start with already rosted pistachios? Or do they need to be raw? Thanks!
Cheesesteak22
I was wondering the same thing
Kim Beaulieu
Use raw pistachios, not already roasted ones. You can roast them with the shells on, this just will give a more subtle flavour. If you like a more intense roasted flavour then take them out of the shell. The easiest place to find ones not already roasted/toasted is a bulk store.
You can add flavourings too if you like. Spices and sauces are fun to add.
Kim Beaulieu
I use raw pistachios.
